  • October 2008: a900 launched in Malaysia a Convention

    The Sony a900 DSLR was launched in the first ever Sony a Convention held in Malaysia. The ceremony was graced by Sony's head of Corporate Planning and Peripheral Products Business from the Digital Imaging Business Group, Ichiro Takagi and General Manager of AMC Marketing Department. Corporate Planning Division, Digital Imaging Business Group, Katsuyuki Kaneko. The Convention also hosted a number of talks and photography workshops led by local and regional photographers. Among those present were Kris LeBoutillier from NG Traveler Magazine, Singapore based fashion photographer Mark Law and local pros, Azrul Abdullah, Grant Corbon, Ted Adnan, Choen Lee and Darren Cheng.

    October 2008: Sony Launches Flagship a900 DSLR

    Sony Electronics Asia Pacific has launched its much anticipated full frame a900 DSLR to meet the demands of professional photographers. This latest state-of-the-art DSLR has the highest image resolution in its class using Sony's own 24.6-megapixel 35mm full-frame size CMOS sensor "Exmor™" and pictures captured with this new sensor will have unprecedented image details with superb colour and tonal gradations.     October 2008: New Premium Lenses for
    full-frame a900

    Sony is expanding its number of high performance Carl Zeiss® and G-Series lenses with the addition of the new SAL1635ZA and SAL70400G models.

    The new Vario Sonnar® T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA lens features a precise focusing system using Sony's Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) with a super wide angle zoom focal length of 16-35mm and an f/2.8 constant aperture- making this lens well-suited for landscape, snapshot and indoor photography. Constructed of 17 lens elements in 13 groups, it includes an extra-low dispersion (ED) for exceptional clarity and center-to-edge resolution.

    The other new addition to the family is the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G lens which offers superb imaging and extremely sharp descriptive performance across its wide focal length range. It is ideally suited for sports, action and wildlife photography. Constructed of 18 elements in 12 groups, it includes two extra-low dispersion glass lenses for high contrast, sharp details, and exceptional center-to-edge resolution with minimal chromatic aberration. Like the SAL1635ZA lens, focus drive is provided by its SSM system, which offers the speed and rotational precision often required for telephoto shooting. For both model, when attached to the flagship a900 camera body, the AF hold buttons can be customized to activate the intelligent preview function.

    October 2008: New Firmware update for a700

    Users of the Sony a700 DSLRs will be pleased to know that a ne firmware update is now available for downloading. The new firmware upgrade will improve the imaging quality and camera performance on High ISO setting, White Balance and D-Range Optimizer. Some of the other added features include "2 steps/3shot" option for HDR layering in auto exposure bracketing mode (single or continuous), a new "Off" option for High ISO Noise Reduction and overall improvement in communication between camera body and vertical grip.     October 2008: Sony Image Data Suite Upgrade

    For those of you using Sony a 100, 200, 300, 350 and 700 DSLRs, head on down to this link for the latest version of the Sony Image Data Suite, which consists of: Image Data Converter SR Ver.3.0, Image Data Lightbox SR Ver.2.0, and Remote Camera Control Ver.2.0 (for a700 only). The updated applications features a wide range of improvements such as higher speed of display, additional of peripheral illumination compensation function, improved D-range Optimizer for RAW files and enhanced filtering functions for a700's Remote Camera Control and a Interval Shooting Set-up Tool (Windows only). This new suite is compatible with Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, Mac OSX v10.4, Mac OSX v10.5.

    August 2008: Two New Lenses For a DSLR

    To satisfy the demands for professional imaging, Sony has announced two new lenses to compliment its existing range of lenses. Joining the Alpha lens line up is the SAL2470Z. This lens was co-developed with Carl Zeiss®, and features a wide angle 24-70mm zoom lens with a large f/2.8 aperture that is ideally suited for discerning landscape and portrait photography. Its exclusive Carl Zeiss® T* (T star) coating technology provides higher light transmission, and minimizes flare to produce images of luminous clarity, color and sharpness.

    Next in line is the SAL70300G which incorporates the optical performance of Sony's G series in a compact and flexible telephoto zoom lens with a 70-300mm telephoto coverage.

    Focus drive is also provided by Sony's Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) technology. To match auto focus operation to the situation, a focus range limiter can be set to a minimum distance of three meters. A lens barrel mounted focus hold button locks focus if desired.

    August 2008: New Flagship Flash Unit

    Sony has announced a new HVL-F58AM flagship flash unit that will replace the former HVL-F56AM model. This new flash features a new Quick Shift Bounce system and a pivoting flash head that gives a higher degree of flexibility for external lighting control.

    August 2008: Sony a200 Wins At TIPA

    The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) has bestowed the Best DSLR entry-level award on the Sony
    a200. TIPA is made up of 30 technical publications from 13 countries and judging is held annually to determine the best cameras which meets consumer demands.

    It cited the a200 as an easy to use and carry camera that is attractively priced for beginners who want to start enjoying all the benefits of DLSR photography. Its 10.2 megapixel sensor delivers top quality images up to ISO 400 and beyond with a fast and accurate auto-focus system while the large LCD screen gives a clear, bright display when reviewing images. Overall the low cost camera has proven to be quite a hit with consumers and a worthy winner of this award.

    August 2008: EISA bestows Awards on a350 & 70-300mm G lens

    The European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) has bestowed its prestigious European Camera on the Year award on the a350. In its citation, EISA identified the camera for having Live View as the most outstanding feature along with its freestyle LCD monitor which offers many creative possibilities for composition and unique angles of view.

    In another category, Sony's new 70-300mm G SSM lens also won high praise from EISA. It was named European Lens of the Year and cited the lens for providing fast and smooth autofocus through its SSM motor while maintaining its manual focus ability. Optically, the lens offers beautifully detailed pictures with an impressively even resolution across the image frame. Any limitations of the relatively small maximum aperture are more than balanced out by the reduced high ISO noise that is characteristic of Sony's DSLR cameras.
